Marrakech and the Sahara Desert
Eight Days from the Red City to the Dunes
The classic Morocco journey, designed properly. A full day discovering Marrakech, then a journey south through the High Atlas, past the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, along the breathtaking Draa Valley and deep into the wild Erg Chegaga Sahara Desert ; one of the most remote and spectacular sand seas in Morocco, accessible only by 4x4.
Two full nights at the desert camp give you time to truly experience the Sahara ; a camel trek at sunset, a visit to a genuine nomadic Berber family in their goat hair tent, a choice between a guided 4x4 tour or a leisurely walk through the dunes, and two nights of extraordinary stargazing under skies free from any artificial light.
The journey is entirely private. Your vehicle, your guide, your pace and your programme belong entirely to you. Every detail is arranged before departure so that nothing stands between you and one of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth.

Trip
Highlights
What makes this eight-day private journey from the Red City to the wild dunes of Erg Chegaga one of the finest Morocco experiences available.
A Full Day in Marrakech
Unlike tours that rush through Marrakech, this journey gives you a dedicated full day in the city with your private guide. The souks, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Majorelle Garden and Djemaa el-Fna ; all explored at your own unhurried pace.
Ait Benhaddou UNESCO Kasbah
One of the finest examples of southern Moroccan earthen architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ksar of Ait Benhaddou has served as the backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia.
The Draa Valley
Two hundred kilometres of ancient kasbahs, date palm oases and Berber villages following the river southward toward the Sahara. One of the most beautiful drives in Morocco.
Erg Chegaga β The Wild Sahara
Unlike the more accessible Erg Chebbi, Erg Chegaga is a genuinely remote sand sea reachable only by 4x4. The vast dunes, the absolute silence and the total absence of tourist infrastructure create the Sahara in its most authentic form.
Nomadic Berber Family Visit
A genuine unscripted encounter with a nomadic Berber family living in the desert. Share mint tea in their traditional goat hair tent. One of the most memorable moments of the entire journey.
Stargazing in the Sahara
Far from any artificial light, the skies above Erg Chegaga are among the finest in North Africa. The Milky Way is clearly visible and the silence of the desert amplifies the experience beyond anything most travellers have ever known.
Your 8-Day
Itinerary
Click on any day below to read the full description. Transfer times are indicative and may vary depending on road and weather conditions.
Upon arrival at Marrakech Airport, your guide will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel or riad in the heart of the medina. The rest of the day is yours to settle in and begin absorbing the extraordinary energy of the Red City. Step out into the labyrinthine streets of the medina, listen to the call to prayer echo across the rooftops, and end your evening at the legendary Djemaa el-Fna square as musicians, storytellers and food vendors fill the air with life.
A full day with your private guide to discover the finest of Marrakech at a relaxed and genuinely immersive pace. Begin at the Koutoubia Mosque, the spiritual heart of the city. Wind through the covered souks where coppersmiths, spice merchants, leather workers and carpet weavers fill every alleyway with colour and craft. Visit the magnificent Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the extraordinary Majorelle Garden. Return to Djemaa el-Fna as the square transforms into a vast open-air theatre at sunset.
An early departure over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres. We stop at the UNESCO ksar of Ait Benhaddou, filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia. After Ouarzazate, we follow the magnificent Draa Valley south ; two hundred kilometres of date palms, ancient kasbahs and Berber villages. We arrive in Zagora, the traditional gateway to the desert, by evening.
Departing Zagora, we drive south through the final settlements of the Draa oasis and across remote terrain by private 4x4. Erg Chegaga is a genuinely wild sand sea reachable only by open desert tracks. No tourist shops, no crowds, no noise ; only the dunes, the silence and the sky. At sunset we mount camels for the classic ride to your luxury tented camp as the first stars appear.
Rise before dawn for the sunrise over the dunes, then breakfast at camp. In the morning, your guide arranges a visit to a genuine nomadic Berber family in their traditional goat hair tent ; a completely unscripted encounter with people who have called this landscape home for generations. In the afternoon, choose between a guided 4x4 tour across the wider Erg Chegaga or a long relaxed trek on foot through the dunes. After dinner, stargazing under one of the finest night skies in North Africa.
After a final sunrise and breakfast at camp, we depart north by 4x4 through spectacular pre-Saharan hammada landscapes, past the Iriki dry lake bed and Foum Zguid. Arriving in Ouarzazate in the afternoon, there is time to visit the famous Taourirt Kasbah before a comfortable overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, we return to Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, arriving by early afternoon. The rest of the day is free for last souk shopping, a traditional hammam, or a mint tea on a rooftop terrace. A final dinner at one of Marrakech's excellent restaurants rounds off a remarkable week.
After breakfast, your guide will arrange your transfer to Marrakech Airport. Should you wish to extend your stay, we can arrange additional nights or a continuation to Essaouira on the Atlantic Coast or into the High Atlas Mountains.
Physical Requirements
This journey is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. There is no trekking involved. The only physical activity is the camel ride to and from the desert camp, which is relaxed and manageable for everyone. Walking in the dunes is entirely optional and goes at your own pace.
Accommodation
Two nights in carefully selected hotels or riads in Marrakech bookend the journey. En route you stay in comfortable hotels. Two nights are at the luxury tented camp at Erg Chegaga, with comfortable beds, private bathrooms and freshly prepared meals served under the open sky.
A Journey for Every Kind of Traveller
This journey works equally well for couples, families with children, groups of friends and solo travellers. The combination of Marrakech, the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, the Draa Valley and two nights of genuine Sahara camping makes it one of the most complete Morocco experiences available.
