Morocco has two great Sahara deserts. Erg Chebbi in the northeast near Merzouga, and Erg Chegaga in the southwest near M'hamid. After 25 years guiding travelers through both, I can tell you they feel like two completely different countries. The right one for you depends entirely on what you are looking for.
Every traveler planning a Morocco trip asks me this question. Both deserts are extraordinary in their own way. Both offer the camel trek at sunset, the starlit sky and the feeling of sleeping in the open Sahara. But beyond those shared elements, they attract very different kinds of traveler.
Here is what I tell people when they sit across from me in Marrakech and ask me to choose for them.
Erg Chebbi The Classic Sahara
Erg Chebbi is what most people picture when they think of Morocco. The dunes rise to over 150 metres near the village of Merzouga, turning amber and deep rose at sunset. It is one of the most photographed landscapes in Africa, and there is a reason for that. The scale is extraordinary and the light on those dunes changes all day in ways that are almost impossible to describe.
Getting There
From Marrakech it is around 9 to 10 hours by road through the High Atlas Mountains and the Draa Valley. The drive itself is one of the great journeys of North Africa. Most travelers do this as part of a 3 to 5 day circuit, which makes Erg Chebbi a practical choice if you have a shorter trip.
What You Will Find
The village of Merzouga beside the dunes has a good range of desert camps, from basic budget options to genuinely luxurious tented experiences with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms. The camp infrastructure here is the best developed of the two deserts. The camel trek into the dunes takes around 45 minutes and leads to the camp. It is a classic and beautiful experience.
In peak season October to November and March to April you will share the dunes with other travelers. This does not ruin the experience, but a good guide who knows where to go to find solitude makes all the difference.
Erg Chegaga The Wild Sahara
Erg Chegaga is the desert most travelers never find. It sits deep in the southwest, requiring a full day of driving on piste tracks beyond M'hamid to reach. That effort filters out almost everyone. What you find when you arrive is something close to the original Sahara.
Getting There
From M'hamid you travel by 4x4 across open desert tracks, sometimes with no road visible at all. You stop at ancient caravan routes, visit nomadic Berber families in their goat hair tents and pass through landscapes that simply do not exist near the tourist circuit. The journey to Erg Chegaga is part of the experience itself.
What You Will Find
The first thing every traveler notices when they arrive at Erg Chegaga is the silence. There are no other camps on the horizon. No generators in the distance. No other groups on the dunes. The dunes here extend over 40 kilometres and reach up to 300 metres in places, taller than those at Erg Chebbi, with a more varied landscape of wind-sculpted formations and ancient dried lake beds.
Erg Chegaga requires more time. You need at least 2 nights in the desert to justify the journey and experience it properly. A 7 or 8 day itinerary from Marrakech works well. You also need a good 4x4 vehicle and a guide who knows this terrain.

Which Should You Choose?
Erg Chebbi
You have 3 to 5 days. This is your first time in Morocco. You want a classic and beautiful desert experience with good facilities. You are traveling with young children who need comfortable camps within easy reach.
Erg Chegaga
You have 7 or more days. You have been to Erg Chebbi before. You want solitude and a place that feels completely undiscovered. You want to experience the Sahara as it was before it became a popular destination.
Visit Both
With 10 or more days you can design a loop of southern Morocco that includes both deserts. Approach from the northeast via Erg Chebbi and return via the southwest through Erg Chegaga. It is the most complete way to experience the Moroccan Sahara and the journey between them is itself unforgettable.
When to Go
October and November are the best months for both deserts. The light is golden, temperatures are comfortable during the day and cold but manageable at night. March and April are equally good, with spring flowers in the Atlas valleys on the way south. Avoid July and August. Winter nights can drop below freezing so always pack a warm layer regardless of when you travel.
Whatever desert you choose, the single most important factor in your experience is not the camp or the dunes. It is the guide. A great guide knows when to stop and sit in silence. Knows which direction to walk to find the dune with no other footprints on it. Knows the name of every star above you. Take the time to choose well.
